The Problem:

The most dangerous weapons in the twenty-first century are not bombs and bullets, but the weaponization of mistrust, alienation, rage, disillusionment, nihilism, cynicism, and other tangles of trauma, which make societies more unstable, and all forms of violence more likely.

Our Solution:

To empower people to heal and to protect societies from these weapons, our mission is to teach peace as a skill set, as a life-saving literacy, with as much rigor as the teaching of reading and writing. Peace Literacy is a movement of educators and concerned citizens who want to equip people with the training, skills, and understanding needed for healing the root causes of our problems, rather than merely addressing surface symptoms. Humanity can no longer settle for peace as an abstract concept or sentimental wish. We teach the practical skills and frameworks needed to create peace that is realistic, resilient, and sustainable.

Our Strategy:

We support our mission by:

  • Promoting peace as a literacy, as an active set of skills, concepts, and capacities that blends the strategic thinking of West Point leadership training with the disciplined nonviolence of the Civil Rights Movement, all of which needs to be taught and practiced in our education systems from pre-K through to adult education, just like literacy in reading and writing.

  • Researching, designing, assessing, and distributing Peace Literacy educational materials to support the teaching of Peace Literacy, made available in a variety of formats, including on-line, in print, and in Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality/Extended Reality spaces (from now on “VR”).

  • Facilitating professional development training in Peace Literacy, offered in-person, on-line, and in VR spaces, for educators in pre-K-12 and higher education, as well as for counselors, community leaders, faith leaders, and the general public.

  • Educating students of all ages in Peace Literacy, to help them understand and heal the root causes of rage, violence, mistrust, and alienation, thus strengthening local, national, and global communities, and helping all of us reach our highest potential.

Our Vision:

We envision a world where education in Peace Literacy is recognized as a Universal Human Right. Peace Literacy is the human right that empowers us to protect all of our other human rights. A peace literate world is a just, secure, and prosperous world.
