Sam Black

Board Member

Sam Black has practiced law in British Columbia since 1998 in the areas of labour, human rights, and public interest law, appearing before federal and provincial courts and administrative tribunals. During that time, Sam has taught labour law courses and workshops for lawyers and union staff and activists, and workshops on the law of civil disobedience for unions and community groups, as well as volunteering with various feminist, social justice, and legal organizations.  Sam has mentored law students and lawyers through the Canadian Bar Association and informally throughout her career.

Sam is a life-long learner. The first year of the COVID 19 pandemic provided her the opportunity to take Peace Literacy 1 online through the Peace Literacy Institute and Non-Violent Communication with Oren Jay Sofer.  Sam has also taken courses in trauma-informed practice, collaborative conflict resolution, and mediation through the Justice Institute of British Columbia. She holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Philosophy and a Bachelor of Laws. Sam also volunteers with the B.C. Insight Meditation Society and the Women Lawyers Forum.

The Peace Literacy Institute designs curricular materials that anyone can download and use for free to support Peace Literacy in their schools and communities. We also provide education rates for our workshops so teachers can make the most effective use of the curriculum.
